*4pm: *Eric Cadora, Director, Justice Mapping Center, New York, NY**
**/Location: */3809 Walnut, Seminar Room/ */**
/Mr. Cadora developed the concept of "Million Dollar Blocks," which has
received some considerable attention in the criminal justice field and
the media. The use of geographical mapping systems (GIS) in crime
analysis is not new, of course. But its use in graphically displaying
-- block-by-block -- the home addresses of imprisoned New York City
offenders has proven to be an imaginative tool to highlight patterns of
affected neighborhoods and the substantial costs associated with this
incarceration ("million dollar blocks"). Eric Cadora co-founded the
Justice Mapping Center in 2005 to create these kinds of dramatic
graphical depictions of quantitative data in the belief that they can
help elected officials and other policy makers better understand current
public safety expenditures -- and lead to establishment of sounder
crime-related public policy. Some of this work has been undertaken in
concert with Columbia University's Spatial Information Design Lab. /
