Geoffrey Laredo, Senior Advisor to the Director - National Institute on 
Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health, Former Policy Fellow, U.S. 
Senate Committee on Health, Education & Labor*
Mr. Laredo has served for 19 years in senior policy positions at NIDA, 
the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse & Alcoholism (NIAAA), and the 
Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), as 
well as on Capitol Hill.  He will outline the real world challenges of 
applying what we know from science to the task of crafting policy and 
budgets in Washington.  He will also discuss career trajectories in the 
federal civil service:  What does it take to maneuver, and succeed, as a 
career public servant trying to make a difference?  Several short case 
studies from criminal justice, addiction services and addiction research 
will be presented.

Bill Clinton Delivers Opening Address of "Kerner Plus 40" Symposium*
/This year marks the 40th anniversary of the landmark report that was 
issued by the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders. This 
report, which has come to be known as the "Kerner Commission Report," 
assessed the causes of the dozens of race riots that occurred in this 
country during the 1960s./

Harold Ford Jr. at Penn Model Congress Opening Ceremonies*
/Penn Model Congress is pleased to open its 2008 conference with a 
Keynote Address from *former Congressman and current Chairman of the 
Democratic Leadership Council, Harold Ford Jr. (D-TN).* Elected to the 
US House of Representatives when he was only 25, Ford served on the 
House Budget and Financial Services Committees, and was a prominent 
member of both the Blue Dog Coalition and the Congressional Black 
Caucus. In the 2006 Tennessee Senate race, Ford almost became the first 
African-American Senator from the South since Reconstruction, but lost 
by less than three percent of the vote to Republican, Bob Corker, a 
former Mayor of Chattanooga. Ford is also a Penn alumnus, and in 
addition to his work at the DLC, he currently serves as a senior policy 
advisor for Merrill Lynch and is a political contributor to Fox

immediately until mid-May to early June. Intern responsibilities include 
answering phones, leading tours of the Capitol, opening and sorting mail 
and faxes, potential to assist with drafting constituent correspondence, 
and assisting legislative staff with special projects as necessary. 
Applicant should be a self-starter with excellent writing and 
communication skills who is eager to take on additional responsibility. 
California ties are a plus. This position provides exposure to the

The Association of American Universities (AAU) has two unpaid internship

Genocide Intervention Network*
The Genocide Intervention Network's mission is to empower individuals 
and communities with the tools to prevent and stop genocide and mass 
atrocities.
Our current focus is on ending the ongoing violence in Darfur, Sudan 
which has killed up to 400,000 innocent civilians and displaced 2.5 
million. The Genocide Intervention Network is home to STAND, a student 
anti-genocide network with over 700 chapters, as well as the Sudan 
Divestment Taskforce, a key player in the divestment movement which has 
now resulted in 20 states and 55 universities divesting holdings in 
companies operating in Sudan. We also work on a range of projects in 
North Darfur to protect women while collecting firewood. Beyond Darfur, 
we are preparing to engage in other conflict areas involving large-scale 
violence against civilians.
